The Animal Law Institute

The Animal Law Section holds an annual, all-day continuing legal education program, The Animal Law Institute, in the Spring. The conference is held in a different city every year, but is always in Texas. The speakers include local and national experts in the field of animal law. It is the only conference of its kind in Texas. When details are confirmed, information on the conference can be found on the website and is distributed to all section members via email.
Newsletter
Editor: Katherine Killingsworth
The Animal Law Section produces a newsletter, The Animal Law Reporter, two times a year for members. The newsletters are posted to the website in the “Members Only” section. Anyone interested in helping with production and editing, or contributing an article to the newsletter should contact Katherine at kkillingsworth@settlepou.com.
Education Committee
Chair: Fran Ortiz
The education committee is responsible for student and lawyer educational programs. Projects being considered include an animal law journal, a clinic, and a student writing competition. Anyone interested in serving on the committee should contact Fran at fortiz@stcl.edu.
Legislative Committee
Chair: Susan Hightower
The Legislative Committee follows animal-related legislation in Texas. The committee proposes new legislation, and works with the State Bar to draft and present legislation. For the first time in its history, the section introduced animal-related legislation during the 2011 session.
State Bar/Annual Meeting Committee
The section holds its annual meeting during the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting. The section also conducts two CLE programs as well. The committee is responsible for coordinating the section’s CLE presentations and annual meeting activities.
